How The Law Of Reciprocity Increases Sales With Your Customers
Now that your customers are well educated, they have received more than they expected, and they feel valued because you listened to their input, it is time to benefit from all of your hard work. You are, after all, in the business of selling a product or service to make a profit.
There is a wonderful law at work in the universe called The Law of Reciprocity. And most human beings are hardwired with this governing behavior without even knowing it. Simply put, people will respond to a positive action with another positive action. So when you launch a loyalty program or give customer only discounts, your clients and customers subconsciously want to give something back to you.
You have given them great customer service. You have offered them a product or service that delivers extreme value. You have asked for and listened to their valuable input. They are at this point literally frothing at their proverbial mouths to give value back to you. And this is how you keep your customers coming back.
Present them with special offers that continue to show them how much they mean to you. And when you think about it, your customers are literally everything. Without your customers, all you have is a website or storefront. Your customers work hard all day long at their jobs, and then they bring the money that they earned and hand it to you in return for something.
When you think about the commitment that takes on their part, it makes you want to deliver more extreme value and great customer service.
Show Your Customers That They Truly Are Special
You see what’s happening here? You now are behaving due to The Law of Reciprocity as well. You appreciate that your customer is performing a positive action (spending money at your business) and you respond with a positive action (delivering special offers and customer loyalty programs). And when you allow anyone who has made a previous purchase to receive discounts and purchasing packages that are not available to anyone else, you give yourself the best chance at creating a customer for life.
Just remember that when you create your customer rewards program and special offers, make sure they are indeed special. Offering 5% off discontinued items is not that special. But a 10% lifetime discount on all products and services and sneak peak first-time access to new products is truly incredible, and will be rewarded with future purchases.
If there’s one question to continually ask yourself when trying to win the favor of your customers, it’s this: “am I providing value to them?”
As long as everything you do is in the interests of providing long term value to your customer, whether it’s educating them, entertaining them, solving a problem and so on… you can’t go wrong!
